WHY IS GITHUB IMPORTANT IN TODAY'S COMPUTER SCIENCE CLASSROOMS?

Laurie Carey

With the current rate of advancement and proliferation of technology in our day to day lives, the logical next step would be that our educational system follows suit. In terms of student engagement, access to general resources and, more specifically, access to information, the internet has turned what used to be a day long trip to the library for relevant research material into a 30 minute google search. What’s more, for students already studying topics such as Computer Science in pre-collegiate settings, having the ability to call upon the voluminous amount of data already published to the web is more than a luxury, it’s a necessity for staying up to date. This is where static information confined to the pages of a 5 pound textbook will fail in the face of the dynamically updated documentation one can find on line. Enter GitHub: a free to use collaboration and versioning tool, based in the cloud, completely accessible to anyone with an internet connection and a computer, widely used by both amateur and professional programmers alike. For many, GitHub has been a gateway to a massive community of technologists embarking on the same journey of learning, improving and innovating with software.

Hear from Rosendo Pili and Thomas Carey, Instructors at Nebula Academy as they explore the question: how can GitHub improve the way we teach?
